Health & Physical Education

I'm Ben and I'm back!

You may also know me as Mr. Ben, Mr. Dubs, DJ Dubs ... depends on who you are. I am so incredibly excited to be back at Renaissance! Some of you may remember me from a year ago. I taught 8th grade math at RSS in 2019-20, left for a year, and couldn't wait to get back here. This place is home and I'm eager to see so many of you again!

What's cool this time around is I get to help start up the Health & PE program at RSS. This is my passion and it's something that as I've grown older I'm realizing more and more how our overall health and well-being play such a critical role in our lives. We're putting together a team of health professionals and leaders to guide this course for the benefit of all of us at Renaissance. We'll be delving into mental, physical, social-emotional health, as well as how our adventure education and recreation mesh so well together. It's going to make for a fun year of learning about YOU!

Oh yeah, but this is about me ... I grew up in South Carolina and played baseball decent enough to earn a college scholarship to Division II Erskine College. I pitched for two years there before injuring my elbow and calling it quits. I transfered to Clemson University where I completed my bachelor's degree in Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Management. I ventured into various careers including: sports reporting, technical support, Minor League Baseball front office roles, and coaching.

I married the love of my life, Kelly, in 2013. We have been blessed with two wonderful boys, Xander (4) and Nolan (1).

In late 2014, I discovered my love for running. I've completed three marathons, 26 half marathons, and countless other races since. I have kept track of every mile and to date I've run over 8,500 miles! More recently coinciding with my move to Colorado, I've fallen in love with the mountains and trails. I run them, hike them, explore them, and hope to continue to do so for a long time. On the 14er list, I've sumitted 11 of the 58 peaks with plans to bag a few more this coming summer. I'll keep ya posted!

Finally and most importantly, I love adventure and Renaissance is a great place for that! Our learning will be adventurous, ambitious, and challenging. As with all adventures, it will also be extremely rewarding!

"Climb that mountain not to plant your flag, but to embrace the challenge, enjoy the air and behold the view. Climb it so you can see the world, not so the world can see you." ~David McCullough Jr.
