School Illness Policy

At Renaissance Secondary School, we are committed to maintaining a healthy and safe environment for all students and staff. To prevent the spread of illness, we ask that families follow the guidelines below when determining if their child should attend school.

Managing Illness at School

  • If a student becomes ill at school, they will be sent to the health office and a parent/guardian will be contacted for pickup.

  • In the event of fever or vomiting, students must be picked up promptly.

  • If your child has been diagnosed with a contagious illness, please notify the school office.
     

When to Keep Your Child Home

Please keep your child home if they exhibit any of the following symptoms:

  • Fever: 100.0°F (38°C) or higher.

  • Vomiting and/or Diarrhea

  • Persistent Cough or Difficulty Breathing: Especially if accompanied by fever or fatigue.

  • Severe Sore Throat: Especially if accompanied by fever, headache or swollen glands.

  • Contagious Illnesses: Such as strep throat, pink eye (conjunctivitis), flu, COVID-19, norovirus, RSV or chickenpox. A doctor’s note may be required for return.

  • Rash of Unknown Origin: Must be evaluated by a healthcare provider before returning.
     

Returning to School​​

  • If your child is prescribed antibiotics for the following conditions, they must have completed at least 24 hours of medication before returning:

    • Strep throat

    • Infected skin eruptions (rashes)

    • Other conditions requiring antibiotics

    • Exception: if being treated for Pertussis, student must be on antibiotics for 5 days before returning to school.

  • Fever: ​must be fever-free for at least 24 hours without fever-reducing medication.

  • Vomiting and/or Diarrhea (without other illness symptoms): Must be symptom-free for at least 24 hours.

  • Vomiting and/or Diarrhea (when accompanied by other illness symptoms or due to a virus such as Norovirus: Must be symptom-free for at least 48 hours

  • In some cases, a doctor’s note may be required before returning.
     

COVID-19 Guidelines

  • If your child tests positive for COVID-19, please inform the school. COVID-19 response is now treated like a routine illness per CDPHE Routine Disease Control.
