Standards-Based Grading

Heading 1

Standards-Based Grading at Renaissance

At Renaissance Secondary School, we use standards-based grading (SBG) to give students and families a clearer, more meaningful picture of learning. This approach focuses on what students know and can do—not just the accumulation of points or averages.

For high school students, we also provide traditional letter grades alongside standards-based reporting to ensure transcripts meet college and post-secondary requirements.

Instead of one overall course grade, standards-based grading breaks learning into clearly defined learning targets—specific skills and concepts students are expected to master by the end of a course. Teachers assess student progress on each target throughout the term, providing ongoing feedback and opportunities for growth.

This system allows:

  • Students to understand their strengths and areas for improvement

  • Families to see what their child is learning and how well they are progressing

  • Teachers to adjust instruction and support individual student needs

By focusing on mastery and growth, standards-based grading supports deeper learning, confidence, and academic responsibility.
